Burning Man film recommendations?

Antistoicus (a demipagan) - 09:27pm Oct 17, 2001 PST

Sigh. Things get ever more elaborate.

Here's the story. There is somebody who I mentioned on another thread, a percussionist, who would probably totally get into Black Rock City if he came and would make a great addition to one of the camps. One of the people from that camp has expressed interest. Now comes the question - how do I "sell" a $200, 2000 mile trip into the desert to somebody who has no idea of what Burning is? How does one answer the question, "why do you do this"?

This is not a matter of asking "how do you persuade somebody to go". It's more than that. The very concept of "burning" is a completely foreign one, here in the Midwest. Remember, if you're in Chicago, the nearest "wilderness" area is hundreds of miles away and it's a pretty small, built-up, heavily traveled "wilderness". There are no vast wastelands, waiting to be rented out by BLM - almost all land is privately owned, at this point, and in relatively small parcels. There is just no place where a group of would-be burners could go to escape the world and make their own reality. So, the problem here is how to give somebody a frame of reference, some way of having a sense of what it might be like to go out there.

A lot goes into doing that, and I'm open to a broad range of suggestions. Here's a place to start. Which films have you seen, that seemed to best capture the feeling of being there? The only ones that I've seen so far, were Joe Winston's films: "Burning Man: Just Add Couches", and a sequel to that, which I forget the name of. Any others come to mind? Good entries for a Burning Man film festival?

Rick, don't be a fu**head.

You tried to pull a lame-a**ed prank and it flopped. You wanted to see if you could get Demipagan/Antistoicus to fall for it, when you suggested Pink Flamingos. Except, you sophomoric little halfwit, you chose the wrong target. Demipagan, like most of the Chicago contingent, has been to grad school, and John Waters has a cult following in most of the higher ranked undergraduate institutions. You targeted a PhD candidate with a high school level stunt. What did you think was going to happen, dimwit?

"Uh ... uh ... uh ... gosh, honest, it really speaks to the Playa experience, honest it does, and if you were smart like me, you'd see that!" What a pathetic, mudslinging attempt at face-saving! Face it, and come to terms with it, Rick. Your mark didn't take the bait, and he made a fool out of you. Or, should I say, a bigger fool? Why don't you try to act like a big boy and accept that it just didn't work, instead of trying to salvage your position with this weak attempt at spin doctoring bull***t?

Yes, Rick, Bull***t. You, I and anybody here with an IQ higher than his show size knows d**n well that you'd be laughing your a** off at the guy if he had taken your suggestion seriously. Who do you think you're kidding? Showing that film to a prospective burner is not going to make him want to come.

"Uh ... uh ... but anything can happen on the Playa ..." anything but you managing to have a coherent thought in that pea-sized brain of yours " ... and you might end up camped next to people that disgusting". And the pope might convert to Judaism, but somehow I doubt that either event will occur. The strangeness of burners tends to be greatly exaggerated, mostly by burners who want to make Black Rock City seem a lot wilder and stranger than it really is. It is most, most unlikely than anybody at Burning Man 2002 is going to do anything that comes close to eating a pile of dog sh**.

Maximum IQ warnings? Sure, Rickie, how about a maximum IQ warning for your posts? "If you understood the point of the story of the emperor's new clothes, don't read this idiot's posts, because otherwise you may feel an uncontrollable urge to bash this moron's brains in before he has a chance to breed again, and contaminate the gene pool any more than he might already have, God forbid". Please feel free to use that one on your posts, any time you want. It's my gift to you. A small present, for an even smaller man.

Inquiring minds want to know

Is Techboy related to Patricia Cottard?

Actually, that's an insult to Patricia to ask that. I've come to like Patricia, and even enjoy some of her less-than-soft comments. She can flame while conveying actual thought and content at the same time.

I'd recommend an smidgen less caffeine.

Omit needless words.

Do you really want to go there?

Say, TechboY?

I had checked out your regional midwest link from this site just last week to see what the huge stink was about that you Chi-towners were dragging your dirty boots into our living room over.....and was appalled at what "you" have sunk to there, also.

When I posted the movie ideas above? You may have thought they were totally in jest, but they were not.

The movie "The Big Yellow Bus" (or Trailer?") was indeed about a road trip from hell with two newlyweds. Asking "you" to wear a steel bucket as a helmut in the nude as you view it was a parallel to the surreal aspect your friends may indeed come across at BM. They may in fact "get it", that YOU Techboy, are in fact the main act at Burning Man.. just as THEY would be if they were to go.

The "jest" about the volcano? That was intended to remind you that when you/they venture onto the playa.. or the e-playa.. or to work in the morning... you are bringing with you EXACTLY what you deem most important for the world to see. It is amazing how naked we become to OURSELF when we see what it is that we brought out to the playa. What thoughts or emotions we felt a need to impart.

So, maybe you can call it a truce, and lighten up a bit? Try to understand that WE are not the enemy you need to purge.

We each have vitriol within. Please do not attempt to tap into more than your share.

Inquiring minds couldn't care less.

Is Janna Denig really the love child of Mr. Rogers and Miss Manners? "Really smart people don't say things that make me feel icky". Get over yourself, Janna. When your friends give heat, that gives the rest of us the right to return it.

You've never struck me as being particularly bright, anyway, so why is it that I should find your pronouncements to be of interest?
This inquiring mind wants to know.

Right after he gets done grouting the tub.

Time to blow your tiny little mind, Lucky!

We weren't talking about you. Everything isn't about "Lucky". In fact, darn little is, including your SO's sexual fantasies, I'm guessing. Now get a grip on it, and get lost.

water water everywhere

Oh my fu**. What has happened around here? Why oh why are there so many recent flamewars involving folks from Chicago?

89 more of these to go, but it's more of the same from here on out, and I'd rather not waste any more time or disk space on this c**p. It gets far more abusive from here, though, with at least one call for the murder of somebody who was accused of "really" being me. (Somebody wanted him left bound and gagged in the middle of the desert; dehydration is not a good way to go).

Have to love the (drug induced?) amnesia we're seeing out of the e-Playa regulars, though - reacting to rebuttals to unprovoked personal attacks as if they were unprovoked personal attacks themeselves.
