Burning Man film recommendations?

Antistoicus (a demipagan) - 09:27pm Oct 17, 2001 PST

Sigh. Things get ever more elaborate.

Here's the story. There is somebody who I mentioned on another thread, a percussionist, who would probably totally get into Black Rock City if he came and would make a great addition to one of the camps. One of the people from that camp has expressed interest. Now comes the question - how do I "sell" a $200, 2000 mile trip into the desert to somebody who has no idea of what Burning is? How does one answer the question, "why do you do this"?

This is not a matter of asking "how do you persuade somebody to go". It's more than that. The very concept of "burning" is a completely foreign one, here in the Midwest. Remember, if you're in Chicago, the nearest "wilderness" area is hundreds of miles away and it's a pretty small, built-up, heavily traveled "wilderness". There are no vast wastelands, waiting to be rented out by BLM - almost all land is privately owned, at this point, and in relatively small parcels. There is just no place where a group of would-be burners could go to escape the world and make their own reality. So, the problem here is how to give somebody a frame of reference, some way of having a sense of what it might be like to go out there.

A lot goes into doing that, and I'm open to a broad range of suggestions. Here's a place to start. Which films have you seen, that seemed to best capture the feeling of being there? The only ones that I've seen so far, were Joe Winston's films: "Burning Man: Just Add Couches", and a sequel to that, which I forget the name of. Any others come to mind? Good entries for a Burning Man film festival?

"excuse me", yourself, "herself"

That's "Mr. Demipagan", if you wish to go there. My name is "Joseph" and I'm male.

Am I the one who was "sniveling" about what Ms.Cottard wrote? An interesting choice of words, considering how much bi***ing I've seen you do about Ms. Cottard's posts, yourself, "herself". I wouldn't call expressing bewilderment about Patricia's actions on that thread "sniveling". To start a thread asking for recommendations about how to get a food camp going and have a long-time online friend respond to it with a snide comment about my dating life, is a bizarre experience under any reasonable standard. I'm not about to apologize, or feel embarassed about the fact that I more or less went "What the h**l was that all about? Some friend she is!".

You find my "start-up threads" to be a little "precious", huh? Gee gosh, I'm so sorry that I don't spend my whole time flaming everybody, and talking about which political faction s***s, and why. Gosh, I'm so very sorry that I've made the attempt to stay on subject and get something constructive done here. Can you ever forgive me?

People, in the immortal words of your "hero", Patricia Cottard, "sh*** it". I really do not care who is or is not Bob Stahl's friend, and what an incredible a**hole O'Brien must be, to think that I should. That's so much political bulls***, and I don't have time for that. The man's actions should stand or fall on their own merits. In this case, the merits can be judged by the fact that Stahl came in and chose to disrupt what was developing into a productive discussion of offline resources one might use, to interest new people in Burning Man. This is not the first time I've seen this kind of garbage occur on this board. Once again, I've encountered an alleged "burner", who has sabotaged an effort on behalf of the community, just to show what a "big man" he is. Well, enough of this, already! I've given this forum a fair and reasonable shot, and it just isn't a good place to get things done. You folks want to play political games? Fine. I'm out of here.

Omit needless words.

Well, ya'll asked for "Burning Man film recommendations" not "recommendations for films made at Burning Man". Hence, our recommendations. My year was totally High Plains Drifter.

That's Mono Lake in the background, btw:

That PBS series on "Play" (link posted above) has the best video on Burning Man I've seen. FWIW.

we're not all nice, 'huggy' people

hey bob, is it me, or does it seem like this guy was crying when he wrote that last post?

and hey, while we're on the subject, what is the org going to do about loud theme camps? no more loud theme camps!

dare is say Otto e Mezzo?

Fellini's 8 1/2......

inside the mind of the creator, his fantasies are his reality versus the external pressures surrounding him.........

the final scene is a true Burning Man moment!

from the intro post by the anti-stoic:

"There is just no place where a group of would-be burners could go to escape the world, and make their own reality. So, the problem here, is how to give somebody a frame of reference, some way of having a sense of what it might be like to go out there. "

The frame of reference required is to hand them a camcorder with a blank tape and have them make their own movie from the inside of an inactive volcano with only what props they carry in themselves. And make it a blockbuster. No volcanos in Chi town either? Oh darn. Maybe try this then:

Take one steel bucket. Drill (or pound with a nail) two small eyeholes. Place bucket on your head. Rent the movie "The big Yellow Bus" with Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnez. Watch it while YOU are naked with the bucket on your head, and your non-burner friends are fully clothed watching you watch the movie. They'll fully understand in just one screening.

not really, O'Brien

"Did it sound to you like that dude was crying while he was writing that last post". Not really. I was in the Third Coast, when Antistoicus came in from typing that last message, a few minutes ago. His eyes weren't looking especially red or watery, but he was looking really pi**ed off. Are you surprised?

What a pitiful waste of flesh you are, you worthless walking abortion. It takes a real hero to pick a fight with a pacifist. Oh, but how unjust of me to not give you full credit! You picked a fight with a pacifist, from behind the safety of a computer screen, after waiting for your friends to show up, so you could gang up on him. Never know when he might read a nasty passage out of the Bhagavad Gita at you. Here's hoping that somebody lapses a little, and gives you the "sermon" you deserve.

Ciao and love

p.s. same to you

Techboy, where's the love?

I dislike name-calling. I think it's the last resort of an lazy mind. Or the first resort of someone who can't or won't corral their temper. Wait, was that name-calling? No, it's not, because it's not addressed to any one person. Really.

By all means, get ornery, if need be, but do we have to use phrases like "worthless walking abortion"?

Wow! I'm Sorry, Antistoicus (a demipagan)...

The part of the movie I was talking about was the completly bizarre Lives these characters were living, yes it is an extreme movie, but what do you call camping in the middle of the desert for a week? Those people could just as easy be camped next to you in one of the unbelievable camps on the playa. Yes the movie does depic really weird stuff, but beleive me I truly had no control over that, honest. However in defense you can find some truly disgusting stuff on the playa as well.

"Maybe You should put a PG-17 Rating on your start-up thread header,
so we do not post stuff above a certain I.Q. level"
