Burning Man film recommendations?
WARNING : As I revising this, I am limited to the use of an old hand-me-down
computer . I still can't see streaming media online. Consequently, I don't know whether or
not adult images are present on the other end of these links. Since I can't offer any guarantees,
if adult material would offend you, then just to be safe, please don't click on these links.

Sigh. Things get ever more elaborate.
Here's the story. There is somebody who I mentioned on another thread,
a percussionist, who would probably totally get into Black Rock City
if he came, and would make a great addition to one of the camps. One
of the people from that camp has expressed interest. Now comes the
question - how do I "sell" a $200, 2000 mile trip into the desert, to
somebody who has no idea of what Burning is? How does one answer the
question, "why do you do this"?
This is not a matter of asking "how do you persuade somebody to go".
It's more than that. The very concept of "burning" is a completely
foreign one, here in the Midwest. Remember, if you're in Chicago, the
nearest "wilderness" area is hundreds of miles away, and it's a pretty
small, built-up, heavily traveled "wilderness". There are no vast
wastelands, waiting to be rented out by BLM - almost all land is
privately owned, at this point, and in relatively small parcels. There
is just no place where a group of would-be burners could go to escape
the world, and make their own reality. So, the problem here, is how to
give somebody a frame of reference, some way of having a sense of what
it might be like to go out there.
A lot goes into doing that, and I'm open to a broad range of
suggestions. Here's a place to start. Which films have you seen, that
seemed to best capture the feeling of being there? The only ones that
I've seen so far, were Joe Winston's films : "Burning Man : Just Add
Couches", and a sequel to that, which I forget the name of. Any others
come to mind? Good entries for a Burning Man film festival?

Ninja Tune vs. Burning Man
is pretty good.
As well, if you can find the apotheosis of Crimson Rose, it is really
great.

Two films I like
I have two favorite films. One is Chuck Cirino's 1997 video, aptly
titled MCMXVVII3.4
or however you write 1997 in Roman numerals. I
think it's being sold on the BM website if Actiongrl would ever get
off her duff and fix the RAID card. I'd say more nice stuff about this
video except that Chuck has been promising me a tape of the Public
Service Announcements he did a couple years back but have I seen it?
No. Some gift economy.
There's another one that will start making the film festival circuit
sometime soon called "BurnBabyBurn" that I've probably watched 10
times. You can see the trailer for it at www.paynie.com. The trailer
makes it look like a music video, but it's a lot more than that. I
think there are some clips on the site as well.
The Juicy Danger video is ok -- more a personal journey. The David
Sector video "Burn" reminds me of someone's home movie of their
vacation to Ohio. Fernando Joe Velasquez's "Burning Man - Where's the
Fire" focuses on Pepe's Opera, but it doesn't capture the live
experience of standing around in the freezing cold until 3 a.m.
waiting for people to get their act together, IMHO.
The EGG Show did a great short piece on last year's event. Not
available for sale, though. There are a number of documentaries and TV
pieces out there. Discovery Channel runs things now and again. BBC has
done some cool stuff.
Here's a link to those that BMORG has given a seal of approval to:
BUY
BURNING MAN STUFF NOW!.
If anyone has a link to the Ninja piece, I'd appreciate it if I could
take a look.

If you just want to see something that's online, there's a four 5-6
minute videos from 2000 at www.120seconds.com (just type burningman
into the search box). They're pretty good, but alas I couldn't get the
audio for some reason.

From the lists :
" If you plan a get together ... I have the 97
Burningman video by Chuck Cirino, and I also have a copy of Dean
Mermel's Eye of Rudra, which follows the opera from San Francisco to
performance on the playa in 98. "
Also mentioned : "Where's the Fire ?", "Burn !" "Fall of Man' "
Unfortunately, the usual then happened : one of the members of the
local cabal decided that he wanted a flamewar, started trolling, and
ended the discussion.
Let's return to the discussion of food, now.
